The Rotary Club of Sylvania's Service Projects

Service Above Self is Rotary's principal motto, which means thta every Rotarian is responsible for finding ways to improve the quality of life in his or her community and in those around the world through service.

These club service projects help develop and implement educational, humanitarian and vocational service that helps our community and communities in other countries.

Our current projects include:

Four Way Test Essay Contest -  An essay contest for high school seniors showing how to incorporate the Rotary Four Way Test into their lives. The test is one of the hallmarks of Rotary. Since it was developed in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, who later became RI president, it has never ceased to be relevant. Its four brief questions are not based on culture or religion. Instead, they are a simple checklist for ethical behavior. They transcend generations and national borders.

Group Study Exchange - The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

International Projects - The Rotary motto Service Above Self also conveys the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful international service projects characterize Rotary worldwide.  Presently, the Rotary Club of Sylvania, woring with other partners, is setting up Resource Centers in Belize.  This project is being led by Sylvania Rotary's Mel Honig.

STRIVE - STRIVE was started by Rotarian Don Monney in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, in 1993.   STRIVE stands for, ‘Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education’.  The program is designed to help under-achieving students improve their Grades, Attitude, Attendance and Participation (GAAP).

Youth Exchange - For over 75 years, students and host families have broadened their horizons through Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs.
