Past Sylvania Rotary International Projects
Each year Sylvania Rotarians and local Sylvania organizations donate books, educational and medical supplies and equipment to MESA. In addition we have provided labor to help load over 100 containers of equipment and supplies that have been sent to 4 continents (Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa).
In 2008 the Sylvania Rotary:
-
Rotarian Dave Hunter attended the Uniendo Conference in Costa Rica. Upon his return gave a report to the Sylvania Rotary Club.
-
Purchased an ambulance for $2000.00 to be delivered to the city of Patzcuaro, Mexico.
-
Formed an International Committee to establish long term projects with Rotary Clubs worldwide.
In 2007 the Sylvania Rotary:
-
Drove two ambulances and the MESA truck to Slidell, La. by Sylvania Rotarians. One of the ambulances (donated by the Defiance Rotary) was subsequently shipped to San Pedro Sula. The second ambulance (donated by the N. Baltimore Rotary) was destined for Patzcuaro, Mexico. The MESA truck was loaded with books collected by the Girl Scouts, and was delivered to the library of the Chalmette middle school just south of New Orleans. The money for driving the vehicles was provided by MESA and the Sylvania Rotary.
-
Funds of $500.00 were sent to the Ilo Rotary of Peru for their day care program.
-
Four Owens Rotaractors and 2 Sylvania Rotarians (Mel Honig and Andrew Timothy) attended the Uniendo Conference in San Miguel, El Salvador. During this time computers were delivered and set up at the Hogar Medina (a home for street boys) and the St Vincent de Paul Orphanage in San Salvador. The computers were donated by the Sylvania schools. The Sylvania Rotary Club donated $500.00 for student expenses. MESA also contributed funds to defray student expenses.
-
Helped load and send 3 containers (two in 2007 and one in 2008) of school equipment and supplies to St Ignacio, Belize. The funding and majority of the work and coordination was through the efforts of Father Bob Haas of the Galion Rotary Club and MESA. Much of the equipment and supplies was donated by Owens Community College, and the Sylvania Public Schools.
In 2006 the Sylvania Rotary:
-
Along with the Tegucigalpa and Perrysburg Rotary Clubs, donated $500.00 for a micro-banking project.
-
Drove an ambulance and book mobile to Slidell, La: and a van to Grand Lake, La. The ambulance was later sent to San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The Sylvania Rotary Club partnered with the Maumee, Slidell and San Pedro Sula Rotary Clubs. Our contribution was $500.00 and the labor (Andrew Timothy and Lourdes Rotaractors) to take the vehicles to Louisiana.
-
Drove a fire truck to Florida, after working in Slidell, La as part of our Katrina relief effort. The Mesa truck (full of books) was also driven down to help resupply local libraries. The Sylvania Rotary donated $500.00 plus drivers and workers (Andrew Timothy, Mel Honig and Owens Rotaractors). The fire truck eventually went to San Pedro Sula.
-
Dug a water-well in the proposed village of Sol de Aqua in El Salvador. The cost of the well $4000.00 was partially offset by a District Simplified Grant of $1000.00. Cooperating in digging of the well were the N.G.O.s of Living Water, El Salvador and A.D.H.U. (Association for Human Development).
